About Igloo Building Supplies

The History of Igloo Building Supplies Group Ltd.

Any Order, Anywhere, On Time

Don Stewart started Igloo Building Supplies in the 1950s in Hay River, NWT. A small town on Canada’s Great Slave Lake, Hay River served as a transportation hub for many Northern communities via barges, boats, planes, and snowmobiles. As a result of this strategic location, Igloo quickly became the go-to company for fulfilling orders even in the most challenging of conditions.

Expanding South

In 1984, Don’s son Barry ventured south to establish operations in Edmonton, Alberta. Today, Igloo Building Supplies Group Ltd. is the biggest supplier of building materials in the capital region, thanks to quality products and timely deliveries.

Expansion Continues

In 1994, Igloo purchased Northern Eau Claire, a building supply company. A year later, Igloo opened a truss-manufacturing plant in Edmonton, showcasing a commitment to expanding manufacturing capabilities and meeting the increasing demand for quality trusses.

Fast forward to today, Igloo’s growth strategy has paid off with operations in Edmonton, Yellowknife and Cornwall. Overall, Igloo’s continued expansion reflects a dedication to maximizing their presence in the industry and catering to the needs of their customers across various locations.

An Ongoing Commitment to Quality

Barry Stewart’s dedication to quality hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2004, he was honored with the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award, acknowledging business leaders who excel in innovation, financial performance, and personal dedication.

From its tiny roots in Canada’s North to its present-day status as a major supplier of building materials worldwide, Igloo has developed a philosophy and management style that thrives on challenge and growth. Our customers benefit daily from the evolution of our business.
